• Medical School 2008

More than 160 staff took part in a forum on June 15 to introduce the new Head of the Gippsland Medical School, Professor Chris Browne. Among other things, Professor Browne outlined how the new course was going to operate, how it will take advantage of its regional location and how he intends to help address the shortfall of doctors in the Gippsland region. ‘Eight Hour Day’ 150 year celebrations of work, rest and play will be exhibited at the Gippsland Campus Switchback Gallery from July 4 - 15. The exhibition, ‘It’s about time!’ 8 Hour Day 1856-2006 will tour nine regional centres in 2006 highlighting this historical achievement which set the standard throughout the world. The Monash University Student Union will also be holding a Solidarity Fundraising Lunch following the opening of the exhibition at 11am on July 4. ’10 things small businesses should NOT do’ will be presented by Vaughan Reimers and Rowan Kennedy from the Department of Marketing at the Gippsland Campus on Thursday, June 22 from 5.30pm as part of the Small Business Festival. The workshop will focus on the keys to marketing success and highlight the top 10 things small business should NOT do.

‘Fabrication of a nitrate biosensor for environmental monitoring’ will be presented by Manzar Sohail from the School of Applied Sciences and Engineering on Wednesday, June 21 from 1pm.

• Making the Grade

A Presentation of testamurs to fifty-four PNG graduands of the Bachelor of Nursing (Post – Registration), offered by the Gippsland Campus School of Nursing and Midwifery, was held in Port Moresby on June 8. Monash representatives were Deputy Vice Chancellor, International, Professor Stephanie Fahey and from the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Associate Professor Tony Barnett and Lecturer, Jenni Grubb. A highlight of the celebrations were the stories told by two graduands who obtained funding for an innovative HIV/AIDS program in a remote area and the improvement of health outcomes for people with TB due to this Nursing program being run in PNG.
