Bass Coast Shire Council’s Open Space and Roads teams came together last week for a good old spring clean and spruce up in Grantville.

The working bee involved maintenance and cleaning works from Scrub Creek all the way through to the Koala Park.

The works were extremely varied covering garden beds, pruning’s and plantings, through to removing graffiti, litter and debris. Over the course of three days the teams completed the following:

  • Garden beds were reinstated with lower maintenance plantings, and mulch and additional toppings replaced to allow for better vision for vehicles and pedestrian traffic
  • Pruning and mulching of all gardens through the town centre
  • Street trees were planted along both sides of the highway
  • Wooden street furniture and playground equipment was stained to improve appearance and longevity
  • Median strips were mown, mechanically edged, sprayed and street swept.
  • Large amounts of gravel and road toppings, which had built up as a result of road resurfacing works, were removed from the kerb and channel
  • Safety barriers along median strips were snipped
  • Weeds and non-wanted vegetation were removed from traffic islands
  • The path behind the highway sound wall had all under foliage uplifted and mulched
  • Roads crews cleared out a major drainage culvert
  • Major litter and debris were removed
  • Graffiti at the foreshore rotunda was removed
  • The Pier Road promenade and toilet block area was cleaned
  • Street signage was updated
  • Bollards were reinstated and painted
  • Softfall was installed in the playground

Works were completed with minimum disruption to traffic and the public. The next working bee is scheduled for the Cowes foreshore area, to tie in with the opening of the Jetty Triangle.

A recent working bee in Grantville included the clean-up of garden beds and planting low maintenance plants.
