Library Helps Make Communication EasyPeople with communication difficulties will benefit from a new computer program available for use at the Sale branch of the Wellington Shire Library. By Wellington Shire Council - 8th May 2007 - Back to News Boardmaker is a computer program that uses visual symbols to create custom made aids to support comprehension or communication for people who have difficulty understanding others or expressing themselves using speech.
Cathy Carr, Library Support Co-ordinator for Wellington Shire Council said the visual aids are suitable for both children and adults in a variety of situations.
"These aids can be used for communicating when the person is ordering a coffee, shopping or borrowing a library book, for example."
"This will also be an opportunity for those who participated at the last session to bring along the communication boards they have made to show others and to share new ideas," said Ms Carr.
The Boardmaker program was purchased with support from the RuralAccess program at Wellington Shire Council
Information sessions will be held at the library and will include examples of aids made using Boardmaker and give attendees a chance to ask questions or chat with others about making and using communication aids.
A speech pathologist from the Wellington Regional Communication Service will also be available at the sessions to provide further information. The Regional Communication Service provides support for people with complex communication needs aged from 18 to 65 years of age and for those who support these people.
