SEATS meeting supports nyora st helier road

The first General meeting of the South East Australian Transport Strategy Inc (SEATS) resulted in some vital support for Bass Coast.

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Assets Director, Guy Wilson-Browne, attended the meeting on 9 and 10 February in Dandenong and Pakenham.

"A key outcome of the meeting from a Bass Coast perspective was that SEATS agreed to support Council’s funding application to Federal Transport Minister, Jim Lloyd.

"The application is for a $50,000 up-grade of the Nyora St Helier Road," said Mr Wilson-Browne.

The SEATS meeting agreed the upgrade was of significance to the transport infrastructure needs of the region.

SEATS Chief Executive Officer, Chris Vardon, stressed the importance of the upgrade.

"An upgrade to the Nyora St Helier Road would be of significant benefit to the tourism and agricultural industries.

"There would also be substantial benefits to the sand-mining industry," said Mr Vardon.

The SEATS meeting was attended by approximately 40 delegates representing Councils and other organisations from Nowra in New South Wales, to Dandenong.

E-BAY TRAINING

A seminar providing training for people or small business that use eBay, will be held in Wonthaggi on February 28.

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Small Business Development Officer, Margaret Murray said that the seminar, entitled "The Basics of Selling on eBay" is aimed at helping people understand how to use the service effectively.

"The internet is a very important tool for people these days.

"Research figures show that many people supplement their family income by selling items on eBay.

"It is also a vital component of many small businesses," said Ms Murray.

The seminar will be presented by Nerada Stern of inDemand and will take place at the Civic Centre in Wonthaggi. For more information about the seminar, please contact Margaret Murray on 5951 3311 or 5671 2211.

trike around australianext stop Bass Coast

Doreen and Garry Fletcher have been travelling around Australia on a trike for the past 530 days in the hope of raising awareness and funds for Arthritis.

Their next stop is Bass Coast Shire and after visiting almost 400 towns, the trip is nearly over.

Doreen first became involved with Arthritis after watching her mother undergo three hip and two knee replacements over a twelve year period.

After doing some research to find out she could avoid going through the same thing in her later years, Doreen was horrified to discover Arthritis was not the old person’s disease she perceived it to be.

Doreen and her husband Garry decided that since Arthritis received no major corporate sponsorship and were unable to fund an education campaign, they would do something about it themselves.

And they did – a long and sometimes arduous, but always fulfilling journey on a Trike Around Australia.

So far the couple has raised almost $100,000 for Arthritis Australia and a swag of local publicity about their journey.

Shire Mayor, Cr Neville Goodwin, encouraged the community to visit the couple when they pass through between 24 and 27 February and support them with a donation.

"3.4 million Australians suffer from Arthritis; 60 percent are between the age of 15 and 65 and only 40 percent are over 65.

"1 in 1000 children suffer from Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, but an estimated 4 in 1000 are still being misdiagnosed with growing pains," stated Cr Goodwin.

Garry and Doreen will be in Thompson Avenue, Cowes on Friday 24 February from 1-5pm and McBride Avenue, Wonthaggi on Monday 27 February from 9am-5pm.

Gippsland innovation festival preparations underway

Bass Coast Shire Council is encouraging local organisations to get involved in the Gippsland Innovation Festival.

The festival will run from 1 May through to 19 May and will celebrate innovation in regional life.

Shire Mayor, Cr Neville Goodwin, said preparations for the Gippsland Innovation Festival were well underway.

"We encourage local organisations and businesses who want to showcase innovation in their business or community to get in contact with festival organisers as soon as possible.

"This Festival is an opportunity to let people know about some of the great things that are happening in Bass Coast.

"One of the highlights of last year’s festival was Malcolm Brody’s Poetry Walks on Phillip Island.

"The theme of this year’s festival is ‘Making Good Ideas Happen’," said Cr Goodwin.

"The Gippsland Innovation Festival is about building community confidence and supporting innovation in the region.

"When business, community and government work together, everyone benefits," continued Cr Goodwin.

Over 30 events have been planned for May, ensuring that the Gippsland Innovation Festival will retain its status as the largest regional innovation festival in Australia. It is part of the nationwide Australian Innovation Festival, enabling organisers to generate national and local exposure for participants.
