Disability and spirituality forum

Disability and spirituality will be the subject of a significant all-day forum being hosted by Wellington Shire Council on Thursday 28 April as part of its Rural Access program.

By City of Latrobe - 7th April 2005 - Back to News

This event - which is being held in the Wellington Room in the council’s Port of Sale Civic Centre in Sale - is open to people of all faiths, representatives of disability and community services, and to any other interested individuals from across Gippsland.

The aim is to foster discussions about how faith communities can be more inclusive of people with disabilities, and to encourage disability and community services to acknowledge and respect the importance of spirituality in the lives of those with a disability.

Keynote speakers at the forum will include:

  • Lorna Hallahan, an Adelaide based social worker and disability advocate who has recently completed a PhD in Disability and Spirituality;
  • Rob Nicholls, Manager of a Uniting Care community services agency in Melbourne;
  • local Anglican priest Rev Anne Turner.

This event is being funded by the Department of Human Services under the State Disability Plan Innovations grants initiative. It has been endorsed by the Victorian Council of Churches and the Leaders of Faith Communities Forum and is the only one of its kind to be held in Gippsland. Other forums are being held in Melbourne, Bendigo and the Goulburn Valley.

Registration for the Gippsland forum is free, but bookings are essential (by 22 April). Registration forms can be obtained from Wellington Shire Council.

Said Wellington’s Mayor Peter Gault: "We are pleased to have the opportunity to support this very worthwhile initiative and welcome the drive to advance the inclusiveness of those with disabilities."
