Cowes boat ramp car park limitations addressed with upgrade by Bass Coast Shire Council
Bass Coast Shire Council is ready to start construction of the eastern carpark upgrade at the Cowes (Anderson Road) Boat Ramp.
This construction of the eastern carpark upgrade at the Cowes (Anderson Road) Boat Ramp project will begin the week of Monday, 15 August and is expected to be completed in late October. This project is jointly funded by $338,000 from the state government's Recreational Fishing and Camping Facilities Program and $338,000 from council as part of its Capital Works Program.
Scope of works at the boat ramp project included maximising car and trailer numbers and reducing congestion, especially during peak periods
Significant improvements
Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Michael Whelan, said that by reducing traffic congestion, especially during peak seasons, boat ramp launch and retrieval times should significantly improve. "These works will also improve pedestrian safety and drainage and reduce maintenance costs across the life of the car park," Cr Whelan said.
Once complete, this project will provide 20 car and trailer parking spaces, as well seven car parking spaces, including an accessible parking space, creating additional car and trailer parking facilities at the boat ramp.
Environmental weed control
Cr Whelan said that while this project requires the removal of trees and other plants, vegetation offsets have been secured. "As part of this project, council will undertake environmental weed control and revegetation using indigenous plants surrounding the new car park, especially at the eastern end. This work will be conducted after the car park construction is complete," Cr Whelan said.
These works will include the use of large plants and machinery and might be noisy at times. Council understands that these works may present an inconvenience to nearby residents, schools and businesses and appreciates their patience. The contractor will make every effort to minimise disruptions during construction. Appropriate traffic and pedestrian control measures will be implemented onsite during these works.
