getGP is the federally-funded accredited provider of Australian General Practice Training in Gippsland.

getGP provides comprehensive, individualised and learner-centred training and assessment of medical graduates in the specialty of general practice. The Gippsland Training Program is recognised as a leader in the development of regionalised GP training in Australia.

Post-graduate training is provided to doctors ("GP registrars") over three years with a minimum of 18 months spent in general practices under the supervision of accredited GP supervisors. Experienced GPs trained as medical educators provide additional educational workshops, tutorials and other learning experiences. Special and advanced rural skills posts are available for additional training in the special skills asked of rural GPs, such as obstetrics, anaesthetics, small town and emergency care. At the end of training the GP registrars sit the final examination for their Fellowship of General Practice (FRACGP) and may also acquire the Fellowship of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine.

Twenty-three general practices across Gippsland, from Cowes to Orbost, are accredited to provide training to GP registrars, showing the high level of commitment of local doctors to encourage, support and train Australia’s future GPs. A positive experience in these years often results in GPs opting to settle in Gippsland.
