Cooinda Hill has been around for over 50 years, commencing in 1952 with a Day Care Centre being opened in a local church hall in Traralgon, with five intellectually disabled children. In 1957 the Day Centre moved to Hickox Street, now the site of the Special Development School. In 1976, our current training and administration centre was established in Dunbar Road, Traralgon, catering for adults, leaving the Hickox Street facility to cater for children (ie the Special Development School). In addition, we have three other smaller campuses, viz -

                 Cooinda Hill Community Centre in Deakin Street, Traralgon
                 A life skills centre, in Tulloch Way, Traralgon
                 A life skills centre, in Grey Street, Traralgon

Cooinda Hill currently provides life experience for approximately 50 people with a disability. This includes communication, art, self-advocacy, prevocational and community based vocational training, community inclusion, personal development, social education, recreation and leisure. In addition, we act as advocates for people and we have an established self-advocacy culture amongst people who attend our service. Finally, we encourage the wider community to include people with a disability in day to day life.

Cooinda Hill relies partly on funding from the Department of Human Services. However, two volunteer 'Opp Shops', See-More-Bargains in Traralgon and Bargain Barn in Morwell also support us. As a result of the great work by the volunteers in these shops, we have been able to provide additional programmes, such as speech pathology, and continue to operate the three additional campuses mentioned above.

Our three shops were opened in 1959/60 and have become an integral part of the Latrobe Valley. All the money raised by our shops is spent in the Latrobe Valley.
