The Edison Mission Energy Latrobe Valley Baseball Association season continued last Sunday with round six action. In A grade Moe/Newborough defeated Morwell 12-1 and Traralgon continued their four game winning streak with a hard fought 13-8 victory over the Sale Rangers.

Traralgon is proving a formidable combination as they continued on their winning way. John Kus opened the pitching and kept the Rangers under control for the first three digs. The Redsox batted strongly and were leading 6-0 at the end of the third. The lead seesawed through the middle part of the match until the Redsox were able to rest control. John Kus finished with nine strikeouts and had strong support from Owen Godenzi who finished the game allowing only one base hit. Godenzi was also one hit short of a cycle after having three hits. In B grade, it was 2-2 at the bottom of the second with both teams starting well. Traralgon then added six runs in the next few innings and good pitching by Jude Power and error-free fielding halted the Rangers scoring. For the Redsox Wayne Beames led the batting and Adam Daniel was amongst the top performers. The Rangers won the C grade game 15-11 in a highly skilled contest. Traralgon’s Wells Humphrey hit a grand slam and Peter O’Callaghan was impressive.

The under 18 game saw the Redsox failing to capitalise on excellent pitching by Steve Cox who pitched seven strikeouts from nine outs. The Redsox batters were unable to convert runners on base into runs over the plate as Sale fielded brilliantly to win 8-4. Sale was too strong for the Redsox in the under 16 game winning 12-1 after a consistent team performance. In the under 14 game Sale went into the match with a three year winning streak against the young Redsox. Strong pitching, fielding and batting from the Traralgon team helped end this streak. The Redsox won 12-9 in what was an excellent team achievement. The Rangers continued their impressive form in the juniors by winning the under 12 game comfortably. The Rangers are developing some excellent young players who are pushing for senior selection.

Morwell had the early advantage leading 1-0 after two innings but it was all Moe/Newborough from then on. A grand slam home run in the Dodgers third dig by Brian Spiteri ignited the team. The Dodgers were aptly led by strong pitching performances by Brendon Date and Duanne Baker. Best players for the Cougars were Gareth Mullet, Nigel Aubrey and Chris Cummings. In B grade the game remained in the balance for the whole day with the Dodgers holding out a slim lead in the second half of the game to come away narrow victors 6-5. Morwell won the under 14 contest 19-9, whilst Moe/Newborough were victors 14-11 in a close contest in the under 12’s.

The Edison Mission Energy Latrobe Valley Baseball Association Under 14 representative team will be travelling to Ballarat this weekend to compete in the Victorian Provincial Baseball League Championships.
