Foot-and-mouth unlikely to benefit Australian dairy farmers

Australian dairy farmers say they are unlikely to benefit from Europe's foot-and-mouth disease epidemic.

The Europeans produce 15 billion litres of surplus milk a year, an amount that exceeds Australia's annual production of 11 million litres.

Executive director of the Australian Dairy Farmers Federation John McQueen has extended his sympathies on behalf of all Australian farmers.

He says the size of the European market means they are unlikely to call on Australia for milk.
