By Gipps TAFE - 18th February 2003 - Back to News

GippsTAFE’s Community Access Centre is again offering "English as a Second Language" courses to the general public this year.

English as a Second Language (ESL) is designed to help migrants of non-English speaking backgrounds overcome the language and cultural barriers which place them at a disadvantage in Australia.

Main programs on offer include English for New Arrivals, Advanced English and ESL Literacy.

English for New Arrivals is a program partly funded by the Immigration Department. The course comprises basic English language skills, settlement information and the opportunity for students to obtain the accredited Certificate of Spoken and Written English at Level 1, 2 and 3.

Advanced English is a program for students with at least an intermediate level of English who wish to undertake further study at University or in TAFE, enter their former profession in Australia, or gain employment which requires profiency in written English.

ESL Literacy is a program designed for longer term residents who can communicate in English, but would like to improve in reading and writing skills.

There is also a special class on offer for older migrants who would like to do ESL Literacy.

The course covers exercises in spelling, sentence construction and reading, excursion and activities as well as practicing simple English conversation.

Classes are held at GippsTAFE’s Morwell campus, Moe Library, the Migrant Resource Centre in Morwell and the Traralgon Neighbourhood House.

A large range of textbooks, cassettes and videos are also available to help students achieve a better level of English.
