Tool Theft :

Unfortunately for tradespeople the theft of tools from vehicles and worksites happens all too often, reclaiming stolen tools can be difficult. Tools that are marked can be readily identified, and be more easily returned to their rightful owners. Using an engraver tools can be marked with your driver’s licence number, preceded by the letter V for Victoria. Items so marked can be traced back to the owner from anywhere in Australia.

Home Security:

As an exercise lock yourself out of your house and pretend you’re a burglar wanting to break in. Look for any tools or instruments you can find lying around which you might be able to use to gain entry. If there are, then these obviously need to be locked away. If you can’t find anything, get some tools you imagine a burglar might bring with them to use to force entry. Then go around the house and try to force your way inside ( though take care not to unnecessarily cause damage to your own property). If you come to a window or door where you think you would be able to force entry using whatever tools you’ve got, then its obvious that security at this particular point needs to be improved. At this stage, look around to see if you are shielded from the view of neighbours or people on the street. If so, then see if you can improve view of your home form adjacent areas by pruning bushes and shrubs etc.

Another exercise is to lock yourself inside the house as if you’ve gone away and see how easy it is to get out. If you can easily open a door or window which would allow you to carry things out, then again it is obvious that you need to improve security at this point.

This simple exercise will identify possible weak points in the security of your home.
