Catch me if you canIt is really just about keeping the audience entertained... By Benj Munro - 15th January 2003 - Back to News Tell us your opinion See what others have said For the first time in a long while, director Steven Spielberg is returning to his roots; entertaining people, not just trying to lecture us and get a message across. His latest work, ‘Catch me if you can’ is as light-hearted as they come, telling the story of Frank Abagnale Jr (depicted by Leonardo DiCaprio).
Abagnale is a young con-artist, who by the age of 21 had impersonated a lawyer, a doctor, teacher and a pilot and made at least $4 million doing so. Meanwhile, pursuing him is the FBI agent Carl Hanratty, played by Tom Hanks. The film mostly revolves around the chase of Frank, while also looking at the loneliness of the solitary con artist and devoted agent.
It is obvious that Leo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks had a ball making this film, as they portray their characters excellently. It doesn’t seem like the actors worked hard to grin, and both shine in their roles. Tom keeps up his tradition of brilliant acting, while Leo reminds why he became so big in the first in the first place: not just a pretty boy, but a talented actor, if Eating Gilbert Grape and This Boy’s Life are any testament to his abilities.
While jumping from town to town and girl to girl, Frank Jr. must keep to himself for the sake of his ‘joyride’, as such. Carl is a divorced man, so dedicated to his job that he hardly sees his daughter. The phone calls between cat and mouse show the loneliness these men share brilliantly.
Set in the 1960’s, the jazzy, swinging, soundtrack and bright friendly look keeps up the light-hearted appearance and the enthusiastic acting of the leading roles. The combined effect adds to the fast paced nature of this fun film that really is just about keeping the audience entertained.
