In 2002 Telstra established the Telstra Foundation - a giving program devoted to enriching the lives of Australian children and young people and the communities in which they live. With a focus on the development of innovative solutions and new approaches to issues affecting children and young people the Foundation has funded local Early Intervention Program Good Beginnings Latrobe for a period of two years to provide additional support services to children in three Latrobe Valley Schools.
The Telstra Foundation aims to enhance social connections and the active participation of children and young people in their local communities whilst focusing on building more cohesive and stronger communities. The foundation also has a strong emphasis on prevention and early intervention whilst achieving measurable results for children and young people
The Good Beginnings Latrobe, Community Connect for Kids program provides school based parenting focused support services to families with children in the early primary school years. Working in partnership with the school communities of Albert St and Elizabeth St Primary Schools in Moe and Crinigan Road Primary School in Morwell, the Good Beginnings Team will commence work in the first week on Term 4.
"The program will commence by providing training, information and support to encourage parents to provide additional support to children within Prep and Grade One classes." said Kellie O'Callaghan, Coordinator of Good Beginnings Latrobe.
"We will also provide ongoing parenting skills programs in group settings and on a one-to-one basis at a school level to encourage positive relationships and interactions between parents and children. Our primary focus is to increase the confidence of young children, who have been identified as needing additional support in participating in school activities or who are having difficulty in making the transition to primary school." Ms O’Callaghan said.
The Good Beginnings Latrobe Community Connect for Kids Team provides an opportunity for kids and parents to talk to about issues affecting school and family life. Parenting information and support. group sessions and individual counselling appointments. Strength building workshops for kids and parents are also provided to the school community. When required referral to other service providers in the local area who provide assistance to families are also provided.
"We are thrilled to be able to offer this innovative program. The Telstra Foundation has given us the opportunity to provide a valuable support service to families with young children within their local school community. Without the support of the Telstra Foundation and the three Primary Schools this program would not be available in the local area." Ms O’Callaghan said.
