Want to lend a hand to make Wellington’s first Airshow a flying success?

West Sale Airshow promises to be one of the region’s biggest and best events for 2003 and Council is keen to encourage a wide cross-section of the community to become involved in this exciting project.

The RAAF- which celebrates 60 years in Sale next year - and Wellington Shire Council jointly announced the major aviation show at the RAAF Base East Sale on Thursday 29 August.

West Sale Air Show 2003 will be held over 12 and 13 April next year, but will begin officially on 11 April with a Freedom of the City March by the RAAF through Sale.

"This historic occasion will provide a great opportunity for the community to acknowledge the terrific support Sale has received from the RAAF over the years," said Mayor Malcolm Hole.

"Our defence force base has contributed to the economic and social wellbeing of this region for 60 years and it’s important that we mark the occasion with a fitting tribute to the thousands of defence force personnel who have been based over the years at RAAF East Sale."

An open day to celebrate the RAAF presence in Sale will be held at the base the following day, 12 April, with a display of planes and aviation history on the ground.

East Sale will have Point Cook historical aircraft on display, together with tactical air force equipment and personnel.

The focus moves to West Sale Aerodrome on 13 April with an aviation industry expo to highlight the history and importance of aviation to the region.

Economic Development Research Officer Paul Telfer wants to hear from any club, group, organisation or individual who’s keen to help organise the event.

"Anyone with a keen interest in aviation, or with experience of mixing the ingredients to create a successful event, is welcome to nominate for the organising committee," he said.

Paul can be contacted for further information on 03 5142 3380.
