Ingram Calls For Permanent Fox BountyIngram calls for Governments to make the fox bounty a permanent arrangement By David Radford - 23rd August 2002 - Back to News The Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has called for all Governments to make the fox bounty a permanent arrangement in Victoria and across the country.
"The fox bounty trial in Victoria has been a cheap and effective way of reducing fox numbers across the state," Mr Ingram said.
"From what I am hearing and seeing the Victorian Government can already declare the statewide fox bounty trial a resounding success.
"In less than two months, over 35,000 foxes have been eradicated across the state and this must be viewed as a resounding success.
"Not only are fox numbers being reduced, some farmers are really enjoying the challenge and reward of participating in the bounty.
"This must be a welcome change for the Victorian Government, which has so often been criticised and blamed for its failure to respond to significant problems of feral animals, particularly associated with national and state parks.
"The fox bounty demonstrates that people in the country are willing to participate in land management programs when they are supported and encouraged by Governments.
"I encourage the Government to broaden the program to assist local communities to deliver cost effective management of pest plants and feral animals in rural Victoria.
"In order for the bounty to become permanent, the matter requires bipartisan support," Mr Ingram concluded.
