Big Plant? It Certainly Was!More than 180 volunteers planted over 7,500 indigenous plants at the Wonthaggi Wetlands By Carol McCormack - 8th August 2002 - Back to News •Tell us your opinion •See what others have said More than 180 volunteers planted over 7,500 indigenous plants at the Wonthaggi Wetlands on Sunday 4 August during the Wonthaggi Big Plant.
"It was fantastic to see so many people participating in such a positive project for the local area," said Ross Horner, President of the Cape Paterson Coastal Plains Landcare Group.
Last Sunday’s Big Plant was the third year of this successful community environmental event. Unlike last year, the weather on Sunday was perfect for planting.
Not only were 7,500 plants planted on Sunday, more than 2,500 plants were planted by local students at Baxter’s Wetlands in Wonthaggi last Thursday and Friday. That means Wonthaggi now has more than 10,000 new indigenous plants!
The Fellowship of Mental Health in Wonthaggi will undertake several smaller specific plantings at the Wonthaggi Wetlands in the coming months.
The Rotary Club of Wonthaggi kindly provided a delicious lunch for everyone involved in Sunday’s Big Plant.
"The benefits to the local environment as a result of Sunday’s Big Plant are just tremendous," said Jodie Gager, Coordinator of the Powlett Landcare Project. "I’d like to thank everyone involved for their terrific work in enhancing the local environment."
