With 43,000 people across 11,000 sq kms in diverse communities, Wellington has established District Advisory Networks to improve councillor-community communication and consultation. The result has been a successful recipe for communication and consultation across a Shire that suffers the tyranny of distance. Using volunteers to act as a conduit between Council and the community and to forge friendships across the Shire, DANs have produced some remarkable results. Each DAN has a minimum of five members, trained and supported by Council, serving for two years or more. In Wellington, the combination of seven enthusiastic DANs, Community Development Officer Michael Rowell and minimal resources – less than $6,000 this year – has guaranteed a two-way flow of ideas to and from Council. DANs are drawing out the grass roots issues that matter most to communities and bringing them to the attention of those who can deliver the results. These include: · bridging the gap between communities where co-operation is hampered by distance, · ensuring that funding is spent where it will do most good · developing facilities when and where needed · building a future based on mutual trust and support "This is a straightforward process of asking, seeking, finding and funding," said Michael. "It’s a big achievement on a small budget. The biggest expense - $2000 for training – is repaid ten-fold in terms of lasting and effective service to the community. "DANs are allowing concerns, ideas and recommendations of communities across the Shire to receive equal Council attention. They’re encouraging community participation and increasing confidence in Council. "The simplicity of this system means that it can easily be adapted for wide application in the public and private sector."
