Sun Tour - Don Porter Trophy update 9am Monday 22 October 2001
The Echuca- Moama team not only leads the Herald Sun Tour in the overall team classifications at the end of Sunday’s gruelling Stage-6 climb from Lakes Entrance to Mt Hotham, but leads in the contest to take out the Don Porter Trophy.
The Don Porter Trophy is being fought for by all municipal teams participating in the 2001 Herald Sun Tour and was formerly called the Latrobe Regional Challenge Cup, a magnificent Bohemian crystal cup initiated and presented by Latrobe City in 1999, won by the Latrobe team in the 1999 Herald Sun Tour, and taken out by the Echuca-Moama team in 2000.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins, said the 31 minutes 40 second lead by the Echuca Moama team from the Shire of Campaspe would be hard to catch, but with almost a full week left of the 2001 Sun Tour, there were plenty of opportunities for the Irish riders representing Latrobe to eat away at the lead. Latrobe City is fourth in the overall team classifications.
Peter Wrolich from the Ballarat*eureka team became the new Tour leader with a 34 second buffer over Australian road champion Steve Williams, and Zbigniew Piatek from the Echuca-Moama team in third place
At the conclusion of Stage-6, Echuca-Moama leads Latrobe by 31min 40sec; the Southern Grampians team by 1hr 18min 6sec; and Ballarat*eureka by 1hr 19min 42sec.
The Don Porter Trophy will be presented to the first municipal team in the overall team classifications at the conclusion of the Herald Sun Tour in Geelong on Sunday 28 October.
