Tennis Victoria Region 13 Grand FinalSale Hurricanes scrap past Maffra Magic By John Glynn - 27th March 2002 - Back to News The grand final of Tennis Victoria Region 13 summer pennant was played at Sale TC in conjunction with the Sale Heyfield TA finals on Saturday with undefeated Sale Hurricanes scraping home from Maffra Magic by just 6 games.
With the doubles rubbers played first only 1 game separated the sides after each had three victories. Hurricanes Aaron Kennedy and Jono Barnett took a tiebreaker from Mick Luke and Mick Pleydell, and Magics David Taylor and Mick Pleydell reversed that result over Mark Elliman and Jono Barnett.
Sale crept away after the mixed doubles rubbers extending their lead to 11 games. Aaron Kennedy and Misty Cook were too strong for Mick Luke and Janette Ingram 8/3.
That lead proved to large to claw back for Magic despite winning four of the six singles rubbers. Magics Alecia Dignan played great tennis to overcome Hurricane captain Melanie Bach 8/4, and Jono Barnett completed a successful day defeating Mick Playdell 8/5. In a match of the highest of standards, David Taylor continued his unblemished record in his 8/6 win over Aaron Kennedy.
Hurricanes win was the first for Sale in the six years of the Region 13 Pennant.
Result: Sale Hurricanes 95 games 7 sets defeated Maffra Magic 89-8
