Sewer Manhole Inspections Reveal Dangerous Playgrounds

Warnings are issued to children and parents

Gippsland Water has uncovered a pastime by local children which has the potential to be fatal. During routine sewer manhole inspections, Gippsland Water staff have found evidence that children have been using these manholes as “underground cubby houses”. In one instance, a car rim, tyre and a metre of pine bark was found in a manhole in Traralgon.

Gippsland Water Field Operations Manager Rob Suares has issued a warning to the children and parents of the Gippsland region, outlining the potential for serious injury. “Sewer manholes should not be accessed under any circumstance by members of the public. The fact is that there is potential for exposure to dangerous gases, and being a confined space, this danger is magnified. All Gippsland Water staff are given the appropriate training for accessing these manholes and under all circumstances wear protective clothing.”
