Newhaven College students (l-r) Ashleigh Burns, Jay Conlan and Carmel Wallis wrote and presented a song about their vision of San Remo and Phillip Island. They are pictured with Bass Coast Shire Council Mayor, Cr Miranda Sage.

More than 120 local students recently participated in an art and literature exhibition as part of the Phillip Island and San Remo Design Framework Project. The students painted, sculpted, drew, wrote about and even sang about their vision for the area’s future.

Sue Porter, Project Officer with Bass Coast Shire Council, said she was delighted with the response from the students.

"Our future is clearly in good hands," said Sue. "The students demonstrated that they have a strong understanding of local issues and a clear vision of how they see the area’s future.

Sue said that the main themes of the student’s artwork, poetry and writing revolved around the following issues:

  • environmental protection and restoration
  • controlling the amount, type and location of development
  • improving recreational facilities
  • "It became obvious throughout the exhibition that children and young adults are much more aware of the issues that affect the areas in which they live, work and play than they are given credit for," said Sue.

Sue explained that 23 finalists were chosen from the exhibition. The finalists will be interviewed on video and the footage used throughout the San Remo and Phillip Island Urban Design Framework Project.

"The video will be particularly useful when the draft framework goes on display over the summer period," said Sue. "The Phillip Island and San Remo Urban Design Framework Project is important project because it is an opportunity to establish a clear vision for Phillip Island and San Remo and to guide land use and development into the future."

People interested in finding out more about the project can call Sue Porter at Bass Coast Shire Council on 5671 2211 or 5951 3311 or send an email to s.porter@basscoast.vic.gov.au

The Year 2021 – Rebecca Clarke, Newhaven College

The waves wash onto the shore,
The water is clear and fresh,
Slowly the sun sinks over the horizon.
People are still lying on the beach and swimming in the water,
I slowly make my way up the beach to the main street.
The brilliantly lit blue lights, light up the town.
    I look into each shop as I pass;
Pet shops, clothes shops and restaurants
are just some of the places I see.
Happy Family’s pass me as I walk further up the street.
Two fit looking police officers patrol the streets, keeping us safe.
Once I reach the motel I prepare for the penguin parade.
I go outside and wait for the shuttle to pick me up,
    Slowly the shuttle pulls up.
I suck the clean air into my lungs,
And climb on to the shuttle.
I arrive at the Penguins bursting with excitement.
Once I have made my way down to the foreshore,
I watch the waddling wonders of the island
    Come up and greet me.
The wild life is so wonderful here,
    I love this place
