GOLD! That was the cry that rang through Gippsland in the early 1900s. Out of all of the places that struck Gold, Walhalla is the best known area. While driving the trail, you will learn much about Gippsland's gold-mining history. Probably the best known is the famous and historic township of Walhalla, nestled in a narrow valley of great natural beauty. Here you'll discover a mountain gold town that 100 years ago was crammed with buildings and stripped of all trees, to provide firewood for the boilers of the deep underground mines. For the more adventurous, many of Gippsland's gold sites are almost impossible to access without the assistance of a 4 Wheel Drive. Guided "tag along" tours are available to make this adventure a reality, of for the more experienced 4 Wheel Driver they can provide challenge and the chance to really experience the Australian bush
