Are Council right or wrong in cutting funding to Lakes & Widerness tourism?| Are Council right or wrong in cutting funding to Lakes & Widerness tourism? |

| The Shire of East Gippsland has decided not to fund Lakes and Wilderness Tourism, the peak tourist organisation in the region. Tourism brings $200 million dollars annually to the area which is a greater contribution than any industry by far. Visitor centres in Bairnsdale and Orbost will close on December 31st, if there is no reversal of the Council's short sighted stance. Are Council right or wrong in cutting funding to Lakes & Wilderness tourism as well as the $250,000 support for Gippsland Development Corporation? |
| What is the shire going to do instead? |

The Lakes and Wilderness group have always come across as very strong and organised. In fact, it is one of the strengths of East Gippsland. The peak tourism body for Gippsland Discovery Phillip Island does not comes across so well because it is made up of 5 shires and do not seem to work together that well. It will be a shame if all the hard work that went into Lakes and Wilderness was lost. Do you know what the council intends to do instead to support Tourism? Are they going to appoint Tourism Development Officers within the council? Also, why are they shutting the Bairnsdale Tourism Visitor Centre. They should at least merge it with some other office or business. Surely the Bairnsdale Tourism Visitor Centre does provide some major benefits.
