In 2017, the eighth year of Come and Play, this arts celebration has been designed for the whole community, including a Creative Gippsland Artist in Residence program.

The Rhyll Community Association will host Artist in Residence, Jakeb Anhvu. One of six artists selected through the Creative Gippsland Artist in Residence program from 2017, Jakeb is an Australian documentary filmmaker who will immerse himself in Rhyll life and create work inspired by his time in Rhyll.

Visitors and community members can enjoy a screening of Jakeb’s work and take part in a discussion with the artist himself on Saturday, 6 May.

In the visual arts, a number of renowned Bass Coast artists will open their studios to the public.

Artists such as Ray Dahlstrom, and Ursula and Werner Theinert will showcase their current works in their studios, offering visitors a glimpse into their current practice as well as an insight into the issues and themes that influence their work.

Diverse exhibitions across Bass Coast include A Speck in the Cosmos; an exhibition by Frank Schooneveldt at his gallery, Goat Island Gallery and Sculpture Garden.

A Speck in the Cosmos is Frank’s response to the Big Bang and the half a trillion galaxies existing in the universe.

For those looking to participate, there are a number of hands-on workshops offered.

These include Printmaking with Plastic with Susan Hall at her studio in Inverloch, offering participants the opportunity to make colourful prints using discarded consumer plastic, and Needle Felting an Iconic Keepsake: A Penguin at the Phillip Island Community Art and Craft Gallery, inviting attendees to learn how to make a penguin using locally produced wool.

There are a variety of performances, including a free open rehearsal of Wonthaggi Theatre Group’s Miss Saigon at the Wonthaggi State Coal Mine; Sing for Fun: Gospel - an invitation to a community singing event; and 3 Singers. 7 Songs (& dinner), which is an insight into the inspiration for three of Gippsland’s local musicians, as well as a browse through the fascinating Bazaar and dinner.

Alongside this, for the first time, Come and Play UP LATE is an evening celebration of the region’s creative community.

For one night only, a number of wonderful spaces will be throwing open their doors to host an exciting evening of art, fun, food and music.

Come and Play UP LATE will take place on Saturday, 6 May on Phillip Island, and on Saturday, 13 May in Wonthaggi, Inverloch and surrounds.
