Capture South Gippsland for the Australia Day photo competition! Open and junior categories, $500/$300 prizes. Smartphone or camera accepted. Entries close 18 January 2026, winners announced 26 January.

Get snapping! The theme this year is Australia Day: South Gippsland - Our Home. Entrants can interpret the theme however they choose. With our rolling hills, rugged coastline, quaint villages, fertile farmland, colourful characters and friendly towns, there’s sure to be something to spark your inspiration. A fancy camera isn’t essential; you can use your smartphone.

Images must be taken within or very close to South Gippsland Shire. There are two prize categories - an open category with a $500 prize and a junior category (15 and under) with a $300 prize. Mary Rogers award

The Mary Rogers Award recognises the outstanding contribution of a current woman councillor as a civic leader in Victoria. Councillor Gilligan was nominated for her significant work on coastal hazard mitigation and her contributions to the Australian Local Government Women’s Association. While she was not selected as the award recipient this year, being nominated is a remarkable achievement, and we congratulate her on this well-deserved recognition.

Green waste amnesty

Dispose of green waste free of charge at Council’s transfer station until 31 December 2025. With a hot, dry January and February predicted, now is an ideal time to prepare your property for the summer by removing dry grass, dead trees and other fire hazards.

Animal cruelty reporting

RSPCA has updated their Memorandum of Understanding, resulting in changes to the responsibilities regarding animal welfare and the management of livestock and poultry in rural and regional areas.

All non-horse livestock and poultry cruelty should now be reported to Agriculture Victoria. The RSPCA will still respond to reports regarding companion animals, horses and recreational animals. For more information, visit Agriculture Victoria website.

Coal Creek Exhibition Opening

Help celebrate the opening of Coal Creek's summer exhibitions. Phantom Ride by Daniel Crooks is a two-channel video artwork featuring footage of the Korumburra railway turntable before its relocation, giving the exhibition a sense of homecoming and place in South Gippsland. Swamp Crimes and Other Stories by Heather Shimmen challenges dominant historical narratives, reimagining images of women and the natural world during colonial times.

Loch Emergency Preparedness Session

As part of the Loch Resilience Project, the Loch Community Development Association is hosting this session in partnership with South Gippsland Council and Mycelia Renewables, with presentations from local emergency services representatives. The focus is on emergency preparedness for the summer period, energy efficiency and savings.

Free MMR Vaccinations

Council’s Immunisation Service is providing free Measles, Mumps and Rubella Vaccines to anyone who may not have received two doses. Measles is a highly infectious disease that can cause serious illness and two doses of MMR vaccine are required for protection. You are at risk of measles if:

  • You were born between 1966 to 1992
  • You were born overseas
  • You are travelling overseas - infants as young as six-month-old can have the vaccine prior to travel

South Gippsland's Road Maintenance Statistics

Council's year-to-date maintenance plan is progressing well, with strong achievements listed below.

Re-sheet Program

  • 39 roads completed
  • 90.35 kilometres of road resurfaced
  • 379,634 metres squared of road area treated
  • 56,039 tonnes of material were placed

Drainage

  • 59 km of road drainage was maintained.

Road Grading

  • Graded 660 kms with five graders operating at two kilometres per day.

White Posts

  • 1,269 white posts installed across sealed and unsealed roads.

Culverts

  • 20 new or replacement culverts installed
  • 34 rural culverts were cleaned using high-pressure water jetting

Changes to Minimum Ages for Social Media

From 10 December, you will need to be aged 16 or older to access age-restricted social media accounts. The changes aim to reduce the risk from harmful design features that make it hard to switch off from social media.

Concession-card holders can apply for the $100 Power Saving Bonus at Milpara House, with assistance available weekdays until December 20 and after January 26

Funding opportunities

Power Saving Bonus - Application Assistance at Milpara House

Concession-card holders are eligible for the Power Saving Bonus, a one-off $100.00 payment for an electricity bill. Milpara House is able to assist with the application process between 10.00am and 1.00pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday until December 20, and again after January 26. Eligible applicants simply need to bring in a recent bill, their concession card, Medicare card and their bank details (not bank card).
