Latrobe City Council will be hosting a new free street theatre performance developed to recognise the 100 year anniversary of the signing of the Armistice which brought an end to World War One.

Latrobe City Council mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said this was the final event of a four-year Anzac Centenary campaign and Latrobe City was proud to be chosen as a host venue.

"The themes of teamwork, of solidarity, of selfless service still enthrall us today. Whilst the signing of the Armistice took place generations ago, it is still an important date to commemorate. In fact, these performances take us through war years from 1914 to 1966 when the practice of members of the military band were also stretcher-bearers and medics, who served under fire. This tradition was inherited from the British army, but one our Anzac musicians made it their own.

"The Armistice Living Tribute street theatre has a local flavor with the involvement of the City of Traralgon Brass Band and also involves professional circus artists performing acrobatics. It’s a unique telling of an often overlooked aspect of our military history," Cr White said.

Cr White added that it was also important at this time of year to remember those who made a contribution to Australia’s war effort prior to the First World War.

"Although not reflected in these street performances, Australians served their country during the Boer War, and there were many local volunteers. I would like to acknowledge their courage and their service too," Cr White concluded.

Performances will take place on 27 October 2018 in Kay Street Gardens, Traralgon at 10am and 12noon.

The street theatre performance is supported by the Victorian Government.
