Latrobe City Council have now opened expressions of interest for community members to join the Social Inclusion Action Group (SIAG). In 2022, Latrobe City Council secured funding to participate in a new statewide program led by the Victorian Government. The initiative is designed to strengthen community connection, foster inclusion, and support positive mental health and wellbeing outcomes. Latrobe City formed the SIAG in 2024 and are once again inviting community members to join.

Inclusive community voices

SIAG members identify and respond to the specific priorities of the Latrobe City community, that promote greater social inclusion and connectedness. This is done by recommending which projects Latrobe City Council should fund through community grants, based on the unique challenges and opportunities of social connection and inclusion at a local level.

The SIAG aims to include residents of all demographics and backgrounds, who have lived experience of social exclusion or identify as one of the following groups:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • People who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, gender diverse, queer/questioning, intersex or asexual (LGBTQIA+).
  • People with a disability
  • People from culturally diverse communities
  • Aged between 18-25 or over 65
  • Single people or single parents
  • People who have experienced hardship or adversity including addiction, mental ill-health, family violence, experience of or at risk of homelessness, or similar circumstances that have contributed to reduced social inclusion
  • People who are passionate about social inclusion and mental health

Latrobe City Council CEO, Steven Piasente, encourages community members to consider joining. "Have a think about how you might be able to help us make sure Latrobe City is a place where everyone feels welcomed and supported, be sure to make an application," said Mr Piasente.

Applications are open until Friday 24 April 2026 and can be completed online or over the phone. Members of the SIAG will be paid for their time and will be offered skill-building opportunities. For more information and to apply, visit Latrobe City Council website. If help is required with an application, call the Social Inclusion Project Officer on 1300 367 700 or email SIAG@latrobe.vic.gov.au
