Workshop Objective: To understand how clusters benefit your business in:

    1. Business Development
    2. Marketing
    3. The Supply Chain

And how technology supports these benefits

  1. What is this project all about?
    An explanation of the overall aim of the project, and a brief summary of who has initiated the project, where the funding has come from, and who is delivering it.

  2. What are Industry Clusters?
    Industry Clusters are an economic phenomenon.

  3. Outline of the Workshop
    Throughout the workshops we introduced case studies of clusters that were using Internet technologies to support their development and growth. We looked at these examples critically and identified what was working, what had the potential to work, what wasn't working and why.

    We asked attendees to tell us how this related to their business (as a single entity, and as part of a cluster).
    Attendees then built a profile of their business to help them (and us) identify the ways clustering may help them. At the end of the workshop attendeesl had a better idea of business interactions and needs, and were able to deduct what technologies could support and enhance the development of an industry cluster that they belonged to.

  4. Using the technology to support Business Development
    Using case studies we demonstrated/explored/reviewed/considered how the technology was being used to support business development activities such as access to research, sharing of information and developing strategic plans.
    Activity: Participants identified/documented how clusters could benefit their business development activities.

  5. Using the technology to support Marketing
    Using case studies we demonstrated/explored/reviewed/considered how the technology was being used to support marketing activities, including complementary marketing (horizontal clustering).
    Activity: Participants identified/documened how clusters could benefit their marketing activities.

  6. Using the technology to support the Supply Chain
    Using case studies we demonstrated/explored/reviewed/considered how the technology was being used to support supply chains activities (vertical clustering).
    Activity: Participants identified/documented how clusters could benefit their supply chain processes.

  7. Summary: The benefits of clustering
    This module involved summarising the benefits of clustering that had been explored throughout the workshop.
    Activity: Participants completed their profile of what sort of "cluster" they would benefit from belonging to. It detailed who they would like it to include and how these businesses would contribute and benefit from belonging to the cluster. The profile also allowed participants to suggest what Internet technologies could be applied to support the activities and processes of the cluster.

  8. The next step
    The presenter made participants aware of what the next stages of the project involved.
